“WHAT SHOULD I DO IF”
It is at the heart of our island culture to want to help those in need, but sometimes we aren’t sure where to start. Although the answer of how to help a homeless person on the street is not simple, below are some general answers. Always remember to treat each person with dignity and respect, but also follow your own instincts. A little kindness goes a long way and can make a true impact in someone’s life.
Have a question you don’t see here? Let us know by sending us an email at help@guamhomeless.org or leaving us a message in our contact form. We will do our best to try and give you a response as quickly as possible.
We have teams who regularly conduct outreach in the community to connect with the street homeless and start the process of connecting them to applicable resources. We would appreciate your help in identifying any new homeless who we may have not reached.
Please help us connect by email help@guamhomeless.org or completing the contact us form. In your message please let us know..The last known location, as well as other locations the homeless individual or family, have been known to congregate.
- Whether it is a family or individual household.
- If you are sharing about a homeless individual, please identify the individual’s sex.
- For family households, if possible, please identify the number of people to include how many are adults and how many are children.
- If known, please provide the name of the homeless person(s).
- Identify if the homeless person uses a wheelchair or other assistive devices
There are a variety of reasons why persons continue to live on the streets to include, but not limited to, a history of mental illness or drug addiction. Some may have resided in a homeless shelter but choose not to return. The Guam Homeless Coalition’s outreach teams continue to engage individuals who are chronically homeless to build trust while offering available permanent supportive housing and other support services.
Politely ask the store or restaurant owner why the homeless person is being denied services. Homeless persons who are paying customers should be advocated for if they are not causing any harm or problems in the store or restaurant. Members in the community can help by offering to purchase or provide food or drinks to homeless persons who were removed from establishments.
